About This Course

This online course of the English language in the professional sphere «LOOK INSIDE FOOD» is designed for students continuing to study English on Bachelor’s full-time and part-time programs 19.03.04 “Production technology and public catering organization” and 38.03.04 “Commodity expertise” as well as for a wide range of persons, to whom the acquisition of communication skills in professional English is an integral part of their professional development.

The aim of this course is to develop the ability to read original English literature in order to obtain necessary information on the subject, to expand the skill to work independently by doing search-related tasks presented in this course.

The course comprises video lectures, texts and a series of exercises aimed at developing the skills of working with original professional English texts and expanding the vocabulary of students.

The course consists of 10 modules; each one has the following structure:

  • a video lecture;
  • a topical vocabulary;
  • adapted texts;
  • exercises aimed at developing skills of reading professionally-oriented text;
  • a final module test.

Several texts joint by a particular topic and a variety of post-text exercises for independent work make it possible to diverge the scope of tasks according to each student’s individual characteristics and level of training. All the material presented in the course makes it possible to increase students’ professional language knowledge and enhance communicative skills. A series of exercises and tests are designed to improve professional reading skills with the dictionary or without it as well as to enhance listening and comprehension skills.

Requirements

The aim of the Module “Foreign language in the professional sphere” is to develop students’ general cultural competence level using the English language as a means of oral and writing communication in order to meet the challenges of interpersonal and cross-cultural interaction in production technology and public catering organization as well as in the area of commodity expertise.

In order to complete the distance online course «LOOK INSIDE FOOD», students should:

  • possess basic skills of everyday and business communication;
  • understand oral (monological and dialogue) pragmatic speech;
  • possess basic grammar knowledge particular to oral and writing everyday and business communication;
  • know basic vocabulary necessary for everyday, cultural, business and professional communication;
  • be able to read, translate (with or without a dictionary) and comprehend adapted social, political, pragmatic and scientific texts;
  • have basic pragmatic writing skills.

After the completion of the distance online course «LOOK INSIDE FOOD», students will be able to:

  • communicate orally and in a written form in Russian and English to meet the challenges of interpersonal and cross-cultural interaction in production technology and public catering organization as well as in the area of commodity expertise;
  • know the fundamentals of oral and writing communication in Russian and English to meet the challenges of interpersonal and cross-cultural interaction in production technology and public catering organization as well as in the area of commodity expertise.
